Experimentation and Analysis
I wanted to place the 3 characters together in a warm, vivid environment made from found assorted fabrics. This was to not only mimic the vibrancy of Caribbean culture, dress and fabrics, but also to see how the horror effect was changed.
At first, I placed the Jumbie on a golden wood plinth, and organised a mixture of opulent and more traditional fabrics underneath and around it. From this I placed the other two figures in the scene. From above, the scene felt warm and welcoming, almost reminding me of people at a picnic. This was emphasised by the large hat of the Douen and the long flowing fiery hair of the Soucouyant. It also reminded me of a gallery installation due to the white backdrop and ground. I then moved the figures around along with the fabrics slightly, to change the course that the eye takes when moving between details. I found that the vibrant orange fabric that the Douen was placed on attracted my attention first, and that angling the Jumbie head slightly away from the camera towards the window allowed light to hit it better, which was also very eye catching.
On photoshop, I edited the brightness, contrast and warmth on some of the photos. I found that this greatly changed the mood, uplifting it. The edited photos reminded me of a sharp and clean aesthetic that could be features in a design magazine, especially the birds-eye view photo of the figures. Finally, I rearranged the fabrics again and placed the wooden figure with the scene. Placing a fabric swatch upright against the back wall of the scene created more of a boundary and sense of closed space, bringing the actual size of the Jumbie head figure into perspective. I also found that after editing the photos of this scene, the colours of the fabrics and the wood of the Jumbie figure matched together well, reinforcing the feeling of warmth and vibrancy. I took some close-up shots of the fabric in the foreground and the Jumbie in the background, which took the figure out of context and focus, reducing it to a simple wooden shape.
Evaluation
The overall mood, context and effect that the characters had changed during this photo experiment. They appeared more as an installation piece rather than characters intended to be placed in a game. As well as this, the creatures amongst the brightly coloured cloths became and aesthetically appealing scene, with a nice warm colour palette. The colours of the models and fabrics, as well as the patterns, reminded me very much of traditional Afro-Caribbean textiles and clothing.
